The Bird Cluster Project

Doha Design District (DDD) and VCUarts Qatar partnered with Qatari artist, Abdulrahman Al Muftah, to create The Bird Cluster, a sustainable and innovative sanctuary for Qatar’s native Bulbul birds. Installed in Msheireb, the project includes a planter, bird nest, watering tray, and feeding tray, all inspired by Qatari architecture. The design seamlessly integrates into the urban landscape, providing nesting spaces for small birds within a bustling and sustainable city, while supporting local biodiversity. Rooted in research, sustainability, and innovation, The Bird Cluster reflects DDD’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and advancing design-led solutions that contribute meaningfully to community wellbeing and Qatar’s Vision 2030.

By translating the language of Qatari architecture into sanctuaries for native birds, The Bird Cluster demonstrates that sustainability begins with designing spaces where culture, community, and ecology can thrive together. ― Abdulrahman Al Muftah
