Meet Fian Arrafiani

Fian Arrafiani is a Qatari-based Indonesian bio-designer and co-founder of Biolittlething, an independent art and design practice exploring the intersection of science, creativity, and living systems. Working alongside materials scientist Krisnadewi Suciati, her practice investigates biological materials through research, cultivation, and artistic making, asking what kind of future might emerge when humans share authorship with living organisms and non-human collaborators.

We see design as a way of learning from living systems, exploring how we can move from simply using materials to cultivating relationships with them
Key Projects
  • FUNGITERIA - A public art installation concept in Doha exploring how fungi, bacteria, and local organic surplus (such as date palm waste) can become cultivated biomaterials, inspired by the native Qatari plant Tetraena qatarensis.
  • Living Wool - An experimental material project combining traditional Arctic Finnish wool craftsmanship with mycelium-based materials, inviting public reflection on the ethics of using living and animal-derived materials in design.
  • Grown Leather - A material experiment investigating bacterial cellulose cultivation as a sustainable, living alternative to traditional animal leather for design applications.
