Meet Guillaume Rouseré & Dr. Maryam AlSuwaidi

Guillaume Rouseré and Dr. Maryam AlSuwaidi are an interdisciplinary artist and designer duo based in Doha. Having met through Qatar’s art community and the Fire Station Artist in Residence program, their collaborative practice bridges sound, architecture, and urban research to invite reflection on memory, identity, and shared environments.

Guillaume Rouseré
Guillaume Rouseré is a French interdisciplinary and sound artist based in Doha. His listening-led practice explores memory, place, and environmental acoustics through sound, field recordings, and site-specific installations. He co-founded Gubgub Studios (Qatar’s first artist-run space) and is an artist-researcher with the Tangible Lab at VCUarts Qatar.

Dr. Maryam AlSuwaidi
Dr. Maryam AlSuwaidi is a Qatari designer, researcher (PhD), and artist working across spatial practice, cultural identity, and urban transformation. Holding degrees from VCUarts Qatar and Qatar University, her work examines how places acquire meaning through memory, cultural narratives, and everyday human behavior in public space.

Our work creates conditions for listening and attention, translating the invisible, sensory rhythms of a landscape and its stories into immersive spatial experiences
Key Projects
  • After the Rain (2024) (Guillaume Rouseré) - 15th Gwangju Biennale (Qatar Pavilion) | Commissioned by National Museum of Qatar An immersive ambisonic sound and multisensory installation capturing the subtle acoustic life of Qatar's desert after rainfall. Water droplets fall into a reflective pool containing clay vessel fragments, diffusing field recordings through a multichannel sound system.
  • Allow Me… (2020) (Guillaume Rouseré) - Msheireb Metro Station | Commissioned by Qatar Museums & Qatar Rail A permanent public artwork translating an excerpt of H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s 2017 UN speech into a soundwave carved in stone. Utilizes Guillaume’s signature "Sound Fossil" technique developed during his Fire Station residency.
  • Mapping Migration Memories (2023–2026) (Guillaume Rouseré / <IN>Tangible Lab) - Tangible Lab (VCUarts Qatar) | Exhibited in Doha, Shanghai & Beijing A multi-year research project tracing seasonal movements of Qatari families through multichannel soundscapes, oral histories, moving images, and spatial installation.
  • Doctoral Research: Urban Planning & Regeneration (2026) (Maryam AlSuwaidi) - Investigates cultural creativity as a method of urban regeneration in the Gulf. The research challenges exportable "Creative City" templates, proposing a locally grounded framework where cultural identity acts as an active, long-term urban resource rather than an applied visual branding layer.
  • Fables (2022–2023) (Maryam AlSuwaidi) - Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Fire Station Alumni Residency) A three-part installation series (Passing, Berceuse, Cluster) using fragmented narratives, light, human figures, and layered materials to examine how inherited stories shape collective memory and personal identity across generations.
  • Haima’ & Baida’ Furniture Collection (2022–2026) (Maryam AlSuwaidi) - FROMM. x Maryam AlSuwaidi (Shurouq Collection) | Milan Design Week / Fuorisalone, M7, Design Doha Contemporary furniture pieces translating the fluid movement, softness, and shifting geometry of Qatari sand dunes into modern forms through spatial abstraction.
