Doha Design District Reveals Public Art Open Call Shortlist Winners to Be Announced on 11 August

Doha Design District , the creative hub at the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha, has reached a significant milestone in its Public Art Open Call initiative, announcing the 20 shortlisted projects selected from more than 220 submissions received from creatives representing 53 nationalities.

Launched earlier this year, the Public Art Open Call invited artists, designers, architects, and interdisciplinary creatives from around the world to contribute innovative public artworks that help shape the future of creative placemaking in Doha. The initiative was designed to integrate art into the public realm, enriching everyday urban experiences, strengthening cultural identity, and fostering meaningful connections between people and place.

The response exceeded expectations, highlighting the growing global interest in Doha’s evolving cultural landscape and the role of public art in shaping contemporary cities. Participants were encouraged to submit proposals that reflected originality, sustainability, public interaction, and responsiveness to the district’s urban and cultural context.

Following a rigorous evaluation process, a distinguished jury comprising experts from Msheireb Properties, Qatar Museums, and QC+ selected 20 proposals to advance to the final stage. The shortlisted projects represent a diverse international cohort, including five proposals from Qatar, three from the United States, two from Lebanon, and submissions from France, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Japan, India, Finland, Tunisia, Kuwait, and Thailand.

Each proposal was assessed based on artistic vision, innovation, originality, site responsiveness, public engagement potential, sustainability, technical feasibility, and deliverability. The resulting shortlist reflects a wide range of creative approaches that explore how public art can activate urban spaces, encourage dialogue, and enrich the visitor experience.

The journey now enters its final phase. The 20 shortlisted proposals are being presented to the public, who can vote for their favorite works alongside the jury evaluation process. Four winning proposals will ultimately be selected and realized across Msheireb Downtown Doha, transforming key locations throughout the district into engaging spaces for contemporary artistic expression. The winners will be announced on 11 August .

Through initiatives such as the Public Art Open Call, Doha Design District continues to strengthen its position as a leading platform for design, innovation, and cultural exchange. By bringing art into everyday spaces, the program supports creative talent while contributing to a more vibrant and culturally connected urban experience in the heart of Doha.
