Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar President Visits Doha Design District Ahead of Opening of New Creative Hub

Doha, Qatar — Doha Design District hosted a visit from Dr Michael Rao, President of Virginia Commonwealth University, offering a tour of the district’s creative ecosystem and a first look at the university’s dedicated space ahead of its opening later this year.

The visit was an opportunity to showcase the district’s vision and its growing role as Qatar’s destination for design, creativity and innovation. The tour took in the full range of platforms and initiatives the district offers to designers, entrepreneurs and creative businesses, including exhibitions, public art, design talks, workshops, competitions and community programming. It also highlighted the district’s collaborative model, which brings together industry leaders, creatives, educational institutions and cultural organisations to shape a thriving design ecosystem.

Among the stops on the tour was Mada, where Dr Rao met Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar alumni Nada Al Kharashi and Yasamin Al Shaikhi, who are currently artists-in-residence. The visit offered a firsthand look at how VCUarts Qatar graduates continue to shape the district’s creative community beyond graduation.

On the ground floor, the tour continued to the atrium, where Dr Rao attended the opening of TEC, a new coffee shop by Noof Al Heidous, another VCUarts Qatar alumna bringing her own venture into the district.

The President also explored the new space dedicated to the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, being developed within the district and set to open its doors later this year. Its arrival marks another step in Doha Design District’s growing network of institutional partnerships, reflecting the district’s broader commitment to nurturing creativity, innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration across Qatar’s creative landscape.

Once open, the space will add to the district’s mix of creative and learning environments, giving students, faculty and the wider creative community a place to exchange ideas, showcase projects, and host workshops and exhibitions alongside industry professionals. As part of Doha Design District, the space reinforces the district’s role as a bridge between academia and the professional creative sector, giving students greater exposure to real-world design practice and more opportunities to collaborate with the designers, entrepreneurs and industry partners who make up the district’s community.

This kind of partnership sits at the heart of Doha Design District’s long-term vision: building strong ties with educational institutions to grow the ecosystem. By bringing academic voices into its network, the district is creating new pathways for knowledge exchange and talent development, while giving students the chance to engage with the wider design community beyond the classroom.

The visit also touched on what’s ahead for the collaboration, with future plans spanning student engagement initiatives, design programmes, exhibitions, talks, research projects and community-focused activities, all of which will feed into Doha Design District’s year-round programme and support the continued growth of Qatar’s creative economy.

The new space is expected to become an integral part of Doha Design District’s expanding network of creative partners, reinforcing the district’s role as a catalyst for collaboration, innovation and design-led development, and giving students direct access to an environment built for testing, developing and bringing ideas to life.
